"Musician Russell Batiste Jr., drummer for the now largely on-hiatus funky Meters and a key player in dozens of different musical projects, witnessed much of Katrina's destruction and has been living with its legacy ever since. His parents lost their home and have been living in a trailer throughout the fall; Batiste, who's spent much of the subsequent time on the road, said he was interested in creating a musical project to raise money for those continuing to struggle with Katrina's aftermath..."

BATISTE & FRIENDS CELEBRATE FOR NOLA!
"How do you celebrate your birthday? Well, if you're famed funk drummer David Russell Batiste Jr. and you can't throw down in your hometown of New Orleans, you do the next best thing: have a New Orleans Musicians Benefit party in New York City, invite your family and some good, old friends to come jam with you, and then, my favorite part, invite the public to come watch.
Walking into the Lion's Den in the West Village on December 14, I was happy to get out of the cold and excited to see who would show up. The posted line up included Page McConnell (Phish, Vida Blue), Dave Dreiwitz (Ween), Gordon Jones (Dj Williams Projekt) on alto sax, members of Brotherhood of Groove, and singer/guitarist Cris Jacobs from opening band The Bridge..."

Russell has decided to devote more time to Orkestra from da Hood, PBS and Funky Meters - and will no longer be performing w/ Papa Gros Funk - ;-(

August 2004:
Orkestra from da Hood - at the Funk Box, July 17/18 - The shows were OFF THE HOOK... (read a quick review by Mother Dave from the Funky Meters msgboard) Both nights shows showcased many guest appearances, including: Sam Kininger (Soulive), Dave Dreiwitz (Ween), Skerik (Les Claypool's Flying Frog Brigade/Garage A Trois), Peter Apfelbaum (Trey Anastasio Band), Nikki Glaspie and many others were there... the OFH brought down the house two nights in a row... visit the photogallery for pics (thanks Michael @ groovetography ). Stay tuned for video clips from the shows and more reviews.

Also, we will be bringing more content on the OFH, including a first look at the third Orkestra from da Hood CD, being recorded and mixed as you read this information... this new CD will be featuring a huge number of special guest artists to augment the Orkestra from da Hood.
We will be bringing you some video clips from the studio as well as more audio samples from all of the Orkestra from da Hood CDs. You will also be able to read up on the members of the Orkestra; this band is exploding with the most funkiest chops around... and of course RUSSELL!
June 2004:
New Tourdates are posted for 'Orkestra from da Hood' - July 16-18: Baltimore and New Jersey - don't miss these shows, many special guests. The Baltimore, MD shows are at the Funk Box, July 17/18 - Doors Open at 8pm, Showtime: 9pm. Ticket prices are $15 (in advance) and $18 at the door.
